The National Assessment Program provides a wealth of data and information that are used by schools, governments and education authorities to inform decisions about the education of young Australians.
ACARA makes these data available in a number of formats. On this page, you can find the national reports for:
The report of the national analysis of NAPLAN results is released to the public in two stages.
The first stage summary (preliminary) information is released in August. This report shows preliminary results at each year level and domain by state and territory and nationally.
The second stage is the full national report that includes final results by gender, indigenous status, language background other than English status, parental occupation, parental education, and geolocation at each year level and for each domain of the test.
ACARA looks forward to working with states and territories to analyse this unique data set – allowing us to see how students have progressed in the important areas of literacy and numeracy across the years of schooling.
See the interactive report on our 'NAPLAN results' page of this website, PDFs of the national reports are below.

NAPLAN technical reports
NAPLAN writing results
The writing prompt of NAPLAN can be either persuasive or narrative. In 2016, a NAPLAN writing scale was created which was comparable for both genres. The results can be compared and trends analysed in NAPLAN writing data from 2011 onwards (but not for results before then).
NAP sample assessments
After the sample assessments have taken place, a public report is released, providing a national comparison of student performance against the relevant framework. A technical report is also released, which aims to provide detailed information about the conduct of the NAP sample subject so that valid interpretations of the relevant results can be made, and future NAP sample assessment cycles can be undertaken, and linked with, appropriate information from past NAP sample assessments.
