ACARA is conscious that a move to online delivery of NAPLAN will raise many questions about the technical requirements that will need to be met.

It is recognised that most schools will not have one-to-one device ratios. As such, schools will require the flexibility to schedule testing sessions to best manage their available devices and bandwidth.

To enable this, schools conducting NAPLAN tests online will have the opportunity to complete the tests in a prescribed order over a two-week period, rather than the single week allotted to completing NAPLAN paper tests. See our infographic explaining the extended test window.

General requirements

Transitioning to NAPLAN online assumes that schools have suitable hardware and reliable access to the internet. Some provisions will also be made for students, only where necessary, to complete the same tests on computers that do not have adequate or any internet connection. The following list includes the general requirements for NAPLAN online in 2017.

Display must measure 24.6 cm (9.5 inches) diagonally and support resolution of at least 1024 x 768 at 32,000 colours.

Headphones, earphones, earbuds

Headphones, earphones or earbuds must be available for the spelling and numeracy tests.

Keyboard

 

Physical keyboard (wired or wireless) is required for laptops and desktop computers.

Physical keyboard (wired or wireless) is optional for devices with a touch screen keyboard, such as tablets.

Note: An external keyboard is not necessary for successful interaction with online items when students are responding to tests on tablets (although external keyboards for tablets can still be used if a school preferred this approach).

Pointing device

Mouse, trackpad, touchpad or touch screen or other pointing device with which the student is familiar.

Network

Connected to the internet with at least 100 kilobit per second download and 5 kilobit per second upload for each concurrent device in a test session.

Security

The device must be secured so that the student does not have access to unauthorised websites, applications and spell checking features. An approved secure browser app will be provided to assist with the temporary locking down of devices for the test session.

A move to online testing will use a delivery platform that would support a broad range of devices. The following table shows the devices supported and hardware requirements for NAPLAN 2017.

Bring your own device (BYOD) best practices

Some schools are moving towards a BYOD policy that allows students to use their own computer at school. The use of a BYOD laptop or tablet for NAPLAN online creates a number of issues around test security and privacy. These will need to be managed by schools to ensure that the online assessments run smoothly.

BYOD can be used in the NAP testing programs where the following practices are used:

  • The device is used under an appropriate BYOD policy implemented by the school.
  • The device meets the NAPLAN online technical requirements.
  • The device is compatible with one of the NAP locked-down browser applications (outlined below), and this application has been successfully installed and validated on each BYOD prior to the test event.
  • The device has been configured for school network access and is able to access the NAP assessments cloud server successfully.
  • The device has virus protection software installed, where appropriate.
  • The device is fully charged prior to undertaking any NAP tests, with the school managing any unexpected unavailability or failure of a student’s BYOD device.
  • Sufficient network access points are available within the school to support the BYOD devices operating in test sessions. 

NAP locked down browser applications on BYOD

Windows, Apple OSX and the iPad app currently meet the minimum requirements for the NAP locked down browser for BYOD, without extra support from schools and these will be used in trials during 2016.

As at March 2016, the planned NAP locked down browser app for Chromebooks will only operate on BYOD devices where they are enrolled in the Chromebook Management Console. Further consultation with Google is underway to directly support student BYOD without the need for enrolment.
